How to Break Into a Car with a Keypad System

Newer cars have protection against it, but this still works well with older cars. Cars with a numeric keypad entry have five buttons; you know, the ones that say 12-34-56-78-90 on the doors? Well, a nifty trick in breaking into one of these cars –when I say breaking in, I mean because you forgot your combination, right?– is that each group of 5 numbers entered do not reset at the end of each cycle. For example, if you enter 1346795, the computer will actually think you have tried 13467, 34679, and 46795. If you punch in 12345678, it’ll think you’ve keyed-in 12345, 23456, 34567, and 45678. This is done, most likely, because if you accidentally hit or miss a button, you won’t know where you are or when the system has cleared itself before trying again.
Using this flaw and adding a whole lot of logic, we can reduce the amount of total numbers entered to access the car from a few hundred thousand to a mere 3129. Below is the code you can use to gain access to your locked-out car.

Creating websites thumbnails in PHP. (Windows Version)

I haven’t posted for a while, but hopefully this will make up for the fact. You have probably seen website thumbnails used all over the web, and on my site as well. These thumbnails give you a glimpse into a website with out actually having to go there.
I have several sites that I display with website thumbnails, on this site and elsewhere. Before, I had to take a screen capture of my browser window, paste into an application such as Photoshop or Fireworks, then wrestle with cropping and resizing the image to get it to a uniform width and height. There are websites that do this for you, such as Thumbshots and Thumboo, but these sites often place a limit on the number of thumbnails you can create, and more importantly, the size of the thumbnail itself.
I found a program, IECapt, that allows you to enter certain variables and then downloads a snapshot of that website to your computer. I spent a few hours working this into a fairly automated PHP script that downloads the snapshot, then re-sizes it perfectly to a size of your choosing. The image to the right was taken with it.
It works with PNG, JPG, and GIF files, and you can set different variables such as timeout and window size.
Have a suggestion, let me know! I might add the live scrip to the site soon, and a Linux version is on its way.
“Text Document” missing from the right-click menu?

If your “Text Document” has disappeared from your right click “New” menu, then this is for you. I had this problem a few days ago so I thought I would share the solution, because it took me a little while to find one that worked. This can be frustrating not to have, especially if you use this feature all the time, like I do.
What you want to do is relax, download this registry file, unzip it, and run it. The changes might not take place until a restart. Mine changed in a few minutes by itself.
You can look in the registry file to see there’s nothing evil in there.
There you go!
How to move your WordPress install to another host.

Here’s a little tutorial on how to move your WordPress installation to a new host (or server) with little to now downtime.
1. First, backup your current database from the current server and import it to the new server. Not that the different databases might have different prefixes on the names they use.
2. If your new hosting company allows outside database access, proceed with this step. If not, skip to step 3. Open your wp-config.php on the old server and change the database info to point to the new database. Pay attention to the new database name, the address, and of course, the username and password.
3. Copy your whole site from the old server to the new server. A simple drag and drop in FTP should work, but you can also go the techie route and tarball the old site, copy the tar over to the new site, and then un-tar it. Make sure the folder structure is the same.
4. Change the wp-config.php file on the new server now to use the new database info.
5. This step is a little tricky…
If you are moving the whole site:
a. You should be all ready to go to change the nameservers to point to the new site. Please note that if you skipped step 2, any comments (and posts) posted on your old site from the time of step 1 to the time the nameserver changes take effect (usually between 6-12 hours, but can take up to 24), will be gone. If you dont mind, or if your blog does not have all that much traffic, then skip the next step.
b. For an immediate website turnover, ask your old host if they can set the A-Records of your old site to point to the IP of the new site. This should make all the visitors to your old site immediately redirect to the new site, saving the loss of comments.
If you are just moving your WordPress install to a new site/server:
Simply set up a .htaccess redirect from the old WordPress directory to point to the new site. One of these lines should work:
redirect 301 / http://www.younewsite.com/
redirect 301 /oldblog/ http://www.younewsite.com/blog
Disclaimer: I wrote this to help you, but you use this information at your own risk. Always test a new site before switching over to it. If you have any problems, switch the nameservers back to the old host and wait a few hours.

So I called Dell yesterday and after an…
Wait, let me start over. So I text/chatted with them yesterday asking about the Windows 7 CD that came with my laptop. The computer shipped with 7 Home Premium on it, but they sent a Windows 7 Started Edition CD by mistake. So I want to reinstall the OS, but not via the recovery partition. I look at the CD and say “Oh dear, wrong CD”. So I chatted up tech support where a nice lady (Whom I had to explain the problem three times) said she would send me a copy of the Windows 7 Home Premium CD AS WELL AS a completely new hard drive with it preinstalled. I told her that the CD would suffice, but she was insistent that I took the hard drive as well. (Maybe I’m not smart enough to install it from a CD).
So anyway, the CD is being delivered, as well as a new 320 GB hard drive. This isn’t the first time Dell’s been so giving, by the way. Over the course of the four years I had my old desktop, they replaced the motherboard, CPU, and monitor for free. Its near impossible to get to tech support, but once you’re there, its all good.

How to make a homemade POE

I was just about to make my own power over ethernet (POE) adapter for my Ubiquiti Bullet and decided to make a tutorial about it.
What we are trying to do:
Make our own power supply for a Ubiquity product. This isn’t a general POE injector, so don’t try use it on a router.
What we need:
1. An ethernet wirebox. (Like $2)
2. An old ethernet cable (Free)
3. An old (or new) power adapter. Anything between 12 and 25 volts will work. (Free-$30)
4. A Ubiquiti product. I have the Bullet ($40-90)
What to do:
First, start by cutting the ends of the power supply cable and near the end of the ethernet cable.
Next, crimp the wires onto the ethernet cable box. We are only going to use the orange and green wires, as they are the only ones that carry data. Orange-White to pin 3. Orange to pin 6. Green-White to pin 1. Green to pin 2.
Double check the power polarity on your power supply. The positive is usually on the inside. Ubiquiti devices do their power supplies a bit different, so here’s what we are going to do. Put the positive wire onto pins 4 and 5 (The blue ones) and the negative end onto pins 7 and 8 (The brown ones). See pic.
Once this is done, plug in a regular ethernet cable from the box to the bullet and then plug in the power supply.
IT SHOULD WORK!
Once the bullet comes on and you make sure their’s no smoke coming out of it, you can plug the other ethernet cable into your computer. Note that no power goes into the computer. The box combines the cable from the computer with the power supply and sends them both to the bullet.
On the bullet, you need to set a static address of 192.168.1.1. Once you’ve done that, you should be able to ping and log into the bullet.
You’re done!

How to make Firefox run faster.

I don’t usually tinker with the internal settings of a program unless there’s a good reason for it. Usually, this means finding some hidden folder and nerviously editing a .cfg file and hoping the program works like it should afterward.
“Why should I do this?” you may be wondering? Because when you browse to a website that has, say 20 pictures, a few ads, etc., your browser (Firefox) by default has to request these things one-at-a-time from from the web server. It’s like going to the grocery store and getting one thing, coming come with it, going back to the store, getting another, coming back, etc… Because most people nowadays have broadband (fast) internet, we can tell Firefox not to make one trip for each individual item, but instead get all the items at once.
Firefox, being as awesome as it is, has built-in access to it’s own config file. This is what we are going to use to speed up your Firefox. The whole process should take less than a minute, and when you’re done, you’ll be able to browse the web much quicker.
Let’s get started: Type in “about:config” into your address bar. You will be careful, won’t you?
Once you are there, you’ll see a whole lot of rows. Don’t worry! Type “pipelining” into the filter box.
By default, network.http.pipelining and network.http.proxy.pipelining are set to false. We need to set these to “true”, so just double-click them to change their values.
The network.http.pipelining.maxrequests is set to 4 by default, but we can adjust this based as well. A setting of 16 should really change how fast pages are loaded. This number is essentially how many thing’s you are carrying in your shopping bag. Don’t go too high with this because you won’t be able to carry everything! Even with fast internet, 16 should be plenty. Here’s where I would set each to based on how fast your internet connection is: (Dial-up connection: Leave the whole config file alone.) (ISDN or Satellite: 8) (DSL: 16) (Cable or Fiber: 32)

IP to Geo Database in the works.

I’ve just started an project which involves collecting and storing the geographical location associated with a particular IP address. There are quite a few companies out there that offer this service, but I have the time and I want to see if I can make my own. I’m not going to try and gather all the IP addresses, just those from the visitors to my and my friends sites. Keep track of this project via the projects page.
